Puppy Beginnings

Our puppy training program consists of 5 private, in-home consultations lasting for one-hour each. Pricing is done by location please contact us for details.

Getting a puppy or any new dog is very exciting. Your dog starts learning the minute he enters your home, we tend to forget this. Learn how to handle those crucial first days of puppy-hood appropriately. We cover anything and everything you will need to start off on the right foot.

First Lesson: Best scheduled before the puppy arrives. We will cover what you are going to need and what to do with your bundle of joy from the minute you pick him/her up. House training, bite inhibition, leash/collar introduction, door manners will give you a good start on the path of creating a well behaved adult dog.

Second Lesson: Puppy has now adjusted to his new surroundings. We truly believe that owning should be enjoyable, every lessons begins with a review. This allows us to make adjustments that best serve you, your dog and your family. Skills to be taught at in introductory level in this lesson will be; eye contact, leash work, response to the puppy’s name, and confinement.

Third Lesson: You are well on your way and having a great time. The new skills for this lesson are sit and walk away game. At the same time by the use of management tools we are creating the skills of listening even when there are distractions in the environment.

Fourth and Fifth Lessons: At these lessons you build on what you already know and take it on the road. What to do when you have your dog our in public. How to handle company in your home or the friendly neighbour who just wants to say hello. What do you do about other dogs?

After you have completed your puppy lessons we recommend doing a beginner course. This allows you to take all that information and rehearse it in a new environment with the distraction of other dogs and people. Remember these tools are what will give you that great adult dog.

Obedience - Beginners

Shake-a-Paw Dog training has developed a program which is centered around household manners for the pet. However, if competition is your goal the exercises learned in this class will take you a step closer to the ring. Using what is rewarding to your dog and management techniques we help you to show your dog what is expected of him. Training becomes fun for the whole family; children are encouraged to take a role in training the dog so a mutual understanding can be learned. Remember it is far easier to teach your dog the proper habits than to try to alter bad habits later.

Obedience - Advanced (Canine Good Neighbour)

The purpose of the Canadian Canine Good Neighbour test is to ensure that our favourite companion, our dogs, can be a respected member of the community because it is trained and conditioned to act properly in the home, in public places and in the presence of other dogs.
This program embraces both pure breeds as well as mixed dogs, as anti-canine sentiment does not discriminate between the two. The CGN test will be given to dogs at the last class.
